Long Night of Astronomy 2024

Observe, marvel, experience – discover the universe with the first nationwide Long Night of Astronomy!

During the free Long Night of Astronomy, the Stiftung PLlanetarium Berlin and the Astronomische Gesellschaft, together with numerous astronomical institutions throughout Germany, invite you to share your enthusiasm for astronomy with a varied programme.

All participating institutions and programmes can be found at lange-nacht-der-astronomie.de

The programme at our locations

After 10 successful years, the Long Night of Astronomy will be celebrated at all our locations this year. You can look forward to a colourful, free programme and glittering celestial objects!

The secret star of the evening is comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS), which - with a bit of luck - will be prominently visible in the night sky. If it does not disintegrate before its closest point to the sun, it will be visible to the naked eye and provide a spectacular celestial event. Jupiter, Saturn and the moon also invite you to take a look at the night sky together.

Archenhold-Sternwarte

In the historical ambience of the Archenhold-Sternwarte, we welcome you to the free Long Night of Astronomy of superlatives - follow in Einstein's footsteps in the Einstein Hall and listen to astronomical lectures, marvel at the world's longest movable telescope on the roof of the observatory and touch Berlin's largest meteorite in the Museum of Celestial Science.

We will also explain historical astronomical instruments from our collection, take you on a journey through the universe in the small planetarium and, of course, look together through various telescopes into the Berlin night sky. Small workshops, an illuminated planet trail and an air rocket station round off the programme.

Details of the programme will follow shortly.

Wilhelm-Foerster-Sternwarte

Get up close to the sky at the Wilhelm-Foerster-Sternwarte: explore the Berlin night sky during the Long Night of Astronomy with guided observations through the »Bamberg Refractor« and free-standing telescopes and learn all about the visible celestial bodies. In addition to the observations, exciting lectures await you in the observatory's lecture room.

Details of the programme will follow shortly.

Zeiss-Großplanetarium

Look forward to a varied, free programme and sparkling celestial objects in and around the Zeiss-Großplanetarium!

In the planetarium hall, we will embark on a cosmic voyage of discovery: Experts from various planetariums and observatories will provide exciting explanations of the celestial objects observed in a live stream. You can also look forward to exciting fulldome programmes for the whole family.

In addition to interactive hands-on and craft activities, such as building air rockets to launch into the night sky, there will be telescope observations in the open air. Experience the fascination of astronomy up close and with your own eyes!

Details of the programme will follow shortly.
